Unknown Bluetooth trackers: a calm first look

What AirTag-style alerts mean, and why disabling a device is not always the first step.

Marked for professional / legal review before institutional publication. Educational sample only.

Apple, Google, and Samsung phones can warn you when an unknown Bluetooth tracker appears to be moving with you. An alert is information. It is not proof, and it is not a reason to panic.

If you suspect stalking or abuse, do not immediately destroy, disable, confront someone about, or discard a suspected tracker. Playing a sound or removing a battery can notify the owner.

Safer next steps

If it is safe, screenshot the alert on a device the other person cannot see.

Consider speaking with a qualified advocate (The Hotline, a local program) or law enforcement before taking action.

Apple and Google publish pictures of what these alerts look like — see the Resource Center.
