How location sharing actually works

Find My, Google Maps, Snap Map, and family apps — what they show and who might still see you.

Location sharing is usually a setting you turned on once and then forgot. The people list can include family organizers, an old partner, a roommate, or a device still signed into your account.

This article is general education, not a guarantee that your devices are private. Settings change with each operating-system update.

Places to look

Apple: Settings → your name → Find My, and the Find My app’s People tab. Family Sharing members may have additional location abilities.

Google: Maps → location sharing, plus Google account → Security → your devices, and Location history.

Snapchat: Map → Ghost Mode. Friends can still screenshot.

Life360 and carrier “family locate” tools often notify the circle if you leave.

If you may be unsafe

Turning sharing off can send a notification. If you are being monitored, talk with a confidential advocate about timing before you change it.
